Thank you for showing interest in developing EEP dashboards, to bring awareness from real-time sleeping open data to “awareness enabled” living visuals and reports to every viewer.
To build such awareness enabled reports, follow bellow guidelines. But if you are new to Power BI and like to learn and kick start in building better visuals, Microsoft have provided a great place to start learning Power BI. This link gives you great options to learn Power BI from beginning to advanced stage with

- Documentation to help you for every single stage,

For any successful EEP dashboard, most of the time is spent in identifying data and modeling the same to convey the story.
Choose the datasets relevant to the topics displayed in “Topics Selection”. Always ensure to choose the real-world datasets from already available open data sources and/or from any other datasets with open data license(s).
As of now, we are embedding the reports from EEP Power BI Repository. To validate and verify, we need you to upload completed report, cleaned and final datasets (before modeling), when submitting your story. We require your final datasets in any of the below formats.
- Excel & CSV
- API URLs
- T-SQL (With table structure & data)
Download the EEP template Power BI file and start importing the data. Below image, shows the data is taken from austintexas.gov website as OData feed.
Create required steps to clean your data.
Ensure to check your data before it is ready to build any visualisations.
Building the Report
Once the data preparation is complete then you are ready to build your first report. Also ensure to follow the best practices to build your reports and visuals.
For example, below sample shows assigning of proper data category.
Add any custom visuals which may make the report more attractive. Below image shows, import options for the custom visual within Power BI.
After installing, below is the sample of downloaded visual and you can allocate the relevant fields.
Ensure to name the field names relevant to datasets.
Use the Interactions to make your report more interactive & user friendly.
Fully configured report would look like below and in this case, this report is published here.
After successfully creating your report, ensure to review your report by interacting and validating against your data source to ensure that you are providing the right information from the source.
Submit Your Story
Once you are happy with your awareness enabled report, you can submit your story with source data, report, few lines about your story that will bring awareness to people.
